Everything You Need to Know
You must be 18 or older, a U.S. citizen or have work authorization, and have no serious criminal convictions. You must complete the 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course, then apply through the NYS DCJS. After employment, complete the 16-Hour OJT within 90 days. Star Security Training guides you through every step.
Training can be completed in as little as 3–4 days with our Fast Track Package. After submitting your NYS DCJS application, processing typically takes 3–6 weeks. You can begin working once your Pre-Assignment training is complete and application is submitted.
Walk-ins are always welcome! Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and show up Monday through Saturday between 8 AM and 9 AM. You can also register online in advance. We run classes six days a week to accommodate your schedule.
Yes! Star Security Training is an NYC Workforce1-approved provider. Eligible candidates can receive free 8-Hour Pre-Assignment and 16-Hour OJT training. Contact your local Workforce1 Career Center to see if you qualify, then bring your voucher to class.
F-01 is for fire watch at construction sites. F-02 covers facilities with impaired fire suppression systems. F-03 is for safety personnel at indoor places of assembly (clubs, theaters, etc.). F-04 is for temporary places of assembly like outdoor events. Each requires a separate FDNY Certificate of Fitness exam.
It depends on the nature of the conviction. NYS DCJS evaluates each application individually. Misdemeanors may not automatically disqualify you, but certain felony convictions can. We recommend contacting DCJS directly or speaking with one of our staff before enrolling if you have concerns about your background.
Simply walk in or register online for the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training. It's available Monday through Saturday and costs just $80. Bring your current registration card. You'll receive your completion certificate the same day to submit for your annual renewal.
